Leaving the Port de Pollenca town and heading to the north east, you arrive to the Formentor peninsula, a long land strip that stretches out in the sea for about twenty kilometers, and it is the central part and the most northern of the vast Serra de Tramontana promontory, that protects all the coast of this area of Mallorca.
The path to follow is very pleasant, with beautiful panoramic views, but it can get pretty crowded, especially in the summer months and in the hours of the day that range from late morning to mid-afternoon: but it is not surprising that there are so many people moving to reach the extreme point of the peninsula, because from here you can look at great panoramic views and rather bizarre of the great Badia de Pollenca gulf.
So the trip which, indeed, start from Port de Pollenca, then coasts along the militare area that is situated on the border of the sea village, it runs on the hills that are at the beginning of the Formentor peninsula and it becomes more and more evocative and populated, but this is only the first taste of the fantastic scenario that awaits you at the end of the trip.
The first obliged stage, not for special conditions, but only for its spectacularity, is Mirador des Colomer, 4 kilometers from the town: here the cliff that looks to the north, offers panoramic glimpses on the sea and on the island really unforgettable, and you are kidnapped by the magnificence of the natural landscape of this area.
However, continuing the route along the peninsula point, you arrive, after 5 kilometers, to the wide parking lot next to the Platja de Formentor beach, surely the best one in Mallorca and for this reason the most attended.
This corner of coast is characterized by a charming beach of fine gold sand, a long strip of land covered in all its length by small pine trees spots that provide a nice shade, ideal to rest during the hottest hours of the day.
The landscape that you can taste from Platja de Formentor is unique, with mountains to the extremity of the bay that dominate the scenario, but the only fault of this area it is that, since it is very famous, during the entire season it is literally invaded by tourists and it becomes overloaded and chaotic.
To achieve this lido there are various means, in addition to your car and following the panoramic road that we widely talked about at the beginning; in fact, you can get there with many bus services, but the best way, the most charming, it is by taking the ferries that depart from Port de Pollenca; these are very frequent: from April to October there are 5 ferries each day and the time of distance it is about 30 minutes; the single/return ticket price is 7.50 euros.
Always in this area, and in particular in the west side of the beach, there is a fantastic hotel complex, perhaps the most beautiful of the whole island: this is the Formentor Hotel, and you can get there through a small private street, the sole arrival point is precisely the hotel.
Before arriving at the intersection that leads to the famous hotel, the main road of the peninsula becomes more and more intriguing and fascinating: in fact, it slides in the middle of enchanting pine groves then climb to the top of the promontory; to a certain point it directs through a tunnel that goes under the Fumat Mount, emerging a little bit later in the vicinity of the rocky hill of Cap de Formentor, composed, on one side, by a bare promontory, grey and devoid of vegetation, on the other side by a series of low hills covered by a thick woodlands.
On this majestic massif rises the silvery lighthouse that dominates the highest peak of the cliff, and the most exposed to the ocean winds: here the atmosphere touches the maximum suggestion, with the wide view of the island and of the sea below and continuous accompaniment of the noisy winds.
On this Formentor peninsula summit, beyond the spectacular views, you can also admire different bird species, such as the ravens, the swallows and the swifts that fly in the sky in wide circles during the spring months and during the summer migration; obviously, however, most of the birds that inhabit the area are aquatic, and they fly to thousands metres above the promontory sky; the birdwatchers have noticed the prevalence of the puffinus birds.
Finally, we would like to remember that inside a part of the lighthouse there is a snack bar, for the people who want to have a snack before you go back: it is a very simple café-restaurant, rather mediocre or simple, but always very populated as there are competitors in the immediate vicinity!
