Cala d’Or it is a bay located on the south coast of Porto Colom, but mistakenly, all the locations which follow one another on that coast strip are now treated without distinction and are all registered under the same name of Cala d’Or: therefore, when it says Cala d’Or it refers to all those villages adjacent that follow each other without any interruption on the coast, but technically this name refers to a particular bay, single and detached from the others.
However, to unite all of these places was their identical fate: in fact, once these were all fishermen villages, very quiet and relaxing areas that stretched until Porto Petro; in recent decades, from the tourist boom that has invested the island in the 1960s, the same simple and rustic villages have been replaced by modern tourist complexes, and urban development has literally devastated the area.
Now, the coast is occupied by an indistinguishable and continuous strip of white and unobtrusive villas, hotels, restaurants and bars all equal, in a false "Pueblo" style (in Spanish it means country), which makes the area rather uniform and unnatural.
This pseudo Andalusian style suit the old buildings left from the previous tourist generation: the most modern, are mainly concentrated on the irregular strip of land that separates the true location of Cala d’Or from its northen one, namely the Cala Gran.
However, despite the wild urbanization and the excessive buildings in the area, this strip of coast always remains fascinating, and it is worth to visit it for its fantastic small coves, in the midst of high cliffs.
Strong points of the area remain without a doubt the thin golden beaches which demarcate the bays, bathed by beautiful crystalline and clear waters.
Although the beaches are really overcrowded and chaotic during the high season, the sea that washes this part of coast is perfect for long swims, and it will make you forget the disasters that the tourism development has brought in the surrounding area: here, however, on the contrary of the near towns, you can still find small natural areas, with a green and lush vegetation that arrives to the beach, offering pleasantly shady and ventilated spaces.
