About Majorca

A bit of history

Thanks to its position in the centre of the naval routes from the east to the west of the Mediterranean sea, Mallorca has always been a fundamental stage of the European trade until the 16th century when Spain turned its attention, all of its efforts and resources towards the exploitation of the Americas, shifting, in this way the main trade routes.
From that time onwards the Mallorca Island lost its central role and ended up becoming a secluded and neglected place, forgotten by the world, where the social situation considerably changed: the island started to be controlled from the small nobility of the land, that proliferated and exploited, thanks to its extensive land, all the territory of Es Pla, namely the fertile central plains where still today you can find old farmhouses dating back to this period.
This situation lasted for a very long time and finished only in the 1960s, when the mass tourism (as it has been stated) cencelled  most of this social order by wiping out with it also the poverty that was, by then, widespread on the island. The Majorca population, which until that moment had lived of agriculture, the main activity on the island, is very wealthy by now: the 640.000 inhabitants of the island have, in fact, the highest per capita income of all Spain!!

Some numbers
The climate is typically Mediterranean and the average temperature is around 17° degrees with low temperatures that do not fall under 11° and there are maximum temperatures of 24° during the summer months.
This climate makes the island of Majorca an attractive destination all over the year.
In the north of the island is located a mountainous area called Serra de Tramuntana that prevents the winds coming from the north to expiry too violently. The biggest city of Mallorca is Palma de Mallorca.
In this area of the island of Majorca the vegetation is mainly made up of white pines expanses. On the island there are many protected areas, thanks to which, the ecological wealth of the island is almost intact.

When is the right time to visit Mallorca?
The ideal periods to visit the Mallorca Island are, without a doubt, the spring and autumn, in fact, during these seasons the climate it is rather mild and does not certainly reach the high temperatures that assault the island during the months of July and August.
However, even for those who want to change the kind of holiday instead of the usual snow week in winter, a short one in Mallorca in winter is not dissuaded: in fact also in January the temperatures are sufficiently hot and you can easily fill the suitcase of T-shirts  and shorts.
What is important is to remember that during the winter we can encounter with some occasional rainstorm, especially on the mountains of Serra de Tramuntana, which protect the rest of the island by the climatic precipitations and from the winds coming from the north.
